Spray Foam

Spray Foam
Spray foam is one of the most misunderstood materials in rodent control. It can fill space quickly, but standard foam alone is not a trustworthy chew-proof rodent barrier.
Overview
Homeowners love spray foam because it looks final. Rodents love it because untreated standard foam is soft enough to chew through when there is real pressure on the opening.
Where It Helps
- stabilizing awkward cavities
- adding fill over reinforced barrier materials
- reducing drafts after proper exclusion is already in place
Where It Fails
- as a stand-alone rodent barrier
- on active gnaw points
- on openings with real structural movement
- when used cosmetically over an unsealed deep void
Better Use Pattern
Foam works best when combined with:
- copper mesh
- steel wool
- hardware cloth
- a proper sealant finish where needed
Deployment Notes
If you use foam, use it as reinforcement or closure over real chew-resistant material. Treat plain foam-only sealing as temporary unless you have evidence it is protected from gnaw pressure.
Conclusion
Spray foam is not useless, but it is routinely over-trusted. In rodent exclusion, it should support the barrier, not pretend to be the barrier.
